Just today, I was referred to your site from the BackCountry Navigator (BCN) app I’ve used for years.

    I love you maps.

One issue I’m having is that at zoom level 14 (in BCN) the entire viewable area is covered by “Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest” repeated over and over again. Each label takes 5 lines and the label is repeated 35 times. You can see the problem in the attached file.

I’ve tried customizing the theme to hide “landscape features”, but that also removes the names of lakes, etc.

Is there anyway I can hide these repeating large area geographic labels, but keep more specific labels (peaks, lakes, etc).

    Hi Matt,

Tanks for reporting this issue, I can confirm this bug in other APPs too with this forrest.
You are perfect right this is strange and should’nt happen. We process the names of these Multipolygones to be shure that it does’nt happen.

We will have to take a brief look into this issue,
As I see this happens with all other forests and only in Level 14.
This is probably an issue with the tagmapping in mode “wide” – maybe the theme tries to render the poly_label and it isnt present in map at this level. maybe….

This will take some days – I have to finish some other tasks bevore, sorry….

    @Tobias

    Hi Matt,
thanks for your post. There are some issues here, so it’s not that easy.

    – You don’t write which theme you are using. I assume you have a 480 dpi or similar device as your screenshot is 1920×1080 pixels. If you don’t use Elevate XL, try this version, the font size seems too large to me.

    – Backcountry Navigator has had several issues with the correct font size in comparison to other apps. I’m not sure if this is the case here.

    – What’s different: BCN uses smaller map tiles in comparison OruxMaps for example. See the attached screenshot, BCN left, OruxMaps right. Captions are repeated for every map tile, so if BCN uses 256px maptiles in comparions to 512px in OruxMaps, it is repeated four times as much. With very high dpi devices so many problems with maps appear that it gets harder and harder to handle it, especially if apps behave differently. I personally have only a 320dpi device, so I can only test 480dpi in an emulator.

    – Your example is tricky, as it’s a really long name with five words, in the areas I tested I usally have one or two word names, so thanks for that. I added the captions at high zoom levels for forests (and other land areas) in addition to the preprocessed captions, as the latter are only once in huge areas and normally not in the part of the map you see. I probably should move them to ZL 15 in the next update (@Christian – so this is kind of intended behaviour, but here it is messed up).

So what can you do? Try a different theme size. If the problem remains, try a different app to check if it’s a problem with BCN. And wait for the next update, I’ll try a view things.

    Best regards,
    Tobias

Thanks for the replies. Here are a few details about my setup:
    – Phone: LG G2 (1920×1080, 5.2″, 423 dpi)
    – App: BackCountry Navigator

The screenshot on my original post was using the Elevate 3 SVG style. I’ve also tried the Elevate 3 XL and Elevate 3 L styles. Let me play with the different styles and the different text/tile scale settings exposed by BackCountry Navigator and I’ll report back. I’ve also installed OruxMaps, so I compare results there as well.

    Thanks.

I changed that behaviour with today’s Elevate update, maybe it works better for you now.

I said I would report back, so here are my results:

    BackCountry Navigator

I tried Elevate 3 XL, L, and SVG. All had issues with the forest name covering the map at level 14.

I then tried the andromaps_hc.xml style. That doesn’t seem to display the forest name at all which works great for me.

IMO, the forest name isn’t useful when zoomed into levels 14+ since I’m looking at granular details at these zoom levels, so I’ll stick with andromaps_hc.xml for now.

    OruxMaps

I also tried using OruxMaps with AndroMaps to test if I could duplicate the issue with another app. When I select the Elevate theme, the map isn’t working for me. I just see a gray background with refresh icons covering the map area. I select the style using these steps: Menu > Tweaks > Mapsforge style > Elevate XL.xml. I can successfully switch between several other styles, but the Elevate ones I downloaded aren’t working for me.

As I side note, I’ll keep playing with OruxMaps. I see pros and cons in comparison to Backcountry Navigator. Thanks.

    Hi Matt,
    thanks for your feedback.

I think you misunderstood me, the different old Elevate versions all show the forest names at the same levels, Elevate XL just uses a smaller font size so it’s not so massive as in your example. But I changed the behaviour as I wrote above with the update of yesterday, it shows the name now with zoom level 15 and higher. So maybe that works better for you.

For me displaying the forest name at high zoom levels is very useful, and your example (Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest) shows this very well. The forest here is huge an U-shaped. If only the name is shown at the center of the forest (that’s what Christian refered to), it can only be seen with parts of the forest at zoom level 10 or lower (see screenshot attached), and the name is actually shown in an area outside of the forest because the center of the U-shape isn’t within the U.
I use my smartphone while outdoors at zoom 14-18, and it would take some time to zoom to level 10. So the only quick possibility to show landscape names is to have them a bit repeated within the landscape. But as I said before, small and not to often, and this didn’t work out with BCN and Elevate SVG, previous version.

Your OruxMaps problem: you probably have a version mismatch, please use the appropriate as indicated above the downloads – Elevate 3 for OruxMaps 6.4 and higher (current beta/release candidates), Elevate 2 for Oruxmaps 6.0.* (e.g. the playstore version which you are probably using).

    Best regards,
    Tobias

Tobias, Thanks for your reply and your updates. Yes, it is much improved with the most recent update. I look forward to getting more familiar with these maps and styles.

For reference, below is a sampling of the results I’m currently seeing.

Using BCN + Elevate 3XL, I see the following at these zoom levels:
    14: no labels
    15: 4-6 labels
    16: 1-2 labels

In OruxMaps 6.5 RC + Elevate 3L, i see the following at these zoom levels:
    14: no labels
    15 no labels
    16: 2-4 labels

    Thanks again
