As elevate got always bulkier, more complex, less clear (at least Elevate 2) and slower, I began to experiment a bit how much a simple, light theme would be faster and how one could reach a simple, functional rendering with minimal means.
The end result is Lightning, which resembles Elevate in parts (icons, colors), but differs in many other things. It’s definitely faster, not only in comparison to Elevate. The map style is non specific and pretty general on purpose, maybe best for city/tourism usage. Mainly it’s just an experiment what also can be done in a different direction. Some things I will use in Elevate, but maybe someone can use it like it is.
I also tried to make it as compatible as possible, without many variants and sizes. But I learned that it’s not possible with all mapsforge versions (0.3,0.4,0.5 and Locus) anymore. That’s why there’s only a version with SVG symbols, else it’s based on mapsforge 0.3 and optimized for 320dpi, but should work with all displays if you use scaling options.

That’s a very good idea and a very good implementation. I like it.May 7, 2015 at 08:41 #4687

Thanks for the feedback.
As I wrote it was made just for making something as minimal and compatible as possible, which I had to compromise with SVG symbols a bit. Adding styles and other renderthemeV4 tags wouldn’t fit that bill.
I have no plans for it at the moment, but who knows…

I’ve modified Tobias’ Lightning theme to make it visually similar to my Voluntary themes and optimised it for Locus. I’ve named it Velocity – see https://www.openandromaps.org/en/oam-forums/topic/voluntary-uk/page/3/#post-4754 for details and download.
