EmuxParticipantPOI v4 format was implemented in Mapsforge repository:
https://github.com/mapsforge/mapsforge/pull/1804POI v4 files are available on the Mapsforge server:
https://download.mapsforge.org/pois/v4/POI v4 have incredible search performance (using R-Tree and FTS5).
For example, search POI across the whole Germany:
– POI v3: results after many minutes
– POI v4: results in a few secondsCruiser already works with the POI v4 format:
https://github.com/devemux86/cruiserTo create POI v4 files, you need the poi-writer 0.29.0:

ModeratorIs there any backward compatibility?
There will be coexistence of Apps that do, others that don’t and map providers doing, others not …
So, if there were this compatibility, app developers would just use the new lib and not wonder and care about the version on the devices of their users …July 26, 2026 at 09:17 #59231
EmuxParticipantMapsforge 0.29.0 can read POI in both v3 and v4 formats.

ChristianKKeymasterMapsforge 0.29.0 can read POI in both v3 and v4 formats.
Which Version does ORUX use in bith free/paid version ?

EmuxParticipantPOI v4 format was updated (same version) with significant performance improvements:
https://github.com/mapsforge/mapsforge/pull/1813POI v4 files were updated on the Mapsforge server:
https://download.mapsforge.org/pois/v4/To create the updated POI v4 files, you need the poi-writer 0.30.0:

ChristianKKeymasterThis quote contains content marked as private.
Thats the point.
Once Ouxmaps uses V0.29 for a whilke I will switch to POI_V4It doesnt make sense to use a even vast improved POI-Version when no one can make use of it.

EmuxParticipantYou can create POI v4 in a different folder with poi-writer 0.30.0
while keeping the old POI.https://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/openandromaps/pois/mapsforge_v4/
This is how we already do it on the Mapsforge server.
Applications that are updated regularly already use POI v4, e.g. RouteConverter.
There is no point in holding all applications back waiting for just one application.

ChristianKKeymasterThe Pois_V4 are available for Europe + Germany tomorrow 2026-08-29
at
https://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/openandromaps/pois/mapsforge_V4/
The other region will follow begin of September with regular update sheduleWho ever wants this high performance POIs _and_ have a compatible APP is now entitled to replace the standard POIS by the V4 variant.
I will not provide direct download links.
This would cause confusion – even we, the nerds, have to look carefully whixh files are kompatible with which apps.
The usual user (working hard most of the time) wants to have working solutions for their hikes, rides, tours in their rare free time
No more no less.
The worst thing is to end on the field with incompatible things out of the versions jungle.Don’t get me wrong EMUX – I’m a fan of you and your genious mapsforg lib but I want to keep is as simple as possible for the enduser and to archieve a good balance between performance+features and easy handling on the other hand.
Best regards

EmuxParticipantThanks Christian!
To be sure, are you using poi-writer 0.30.0 ?
As it contains even more improvements and creates the updated extremely fast POI v4.

EmuxParticipantI checked the POI v4 metadata, they are created with poi-writer 0.30.0.
Thanks Christian!

Cruiser and Mapsforge developer“Hi Emux, I’ve tried the POI v4 in Cruiser and the result is dizzying [or mind-blowing]—congratulations! Besides category search, OruxMaps also offers a search by tapping directly on the POI on the map. What is the expected behavior for this type of search with V4? Using v3, it is practically instantaneous. Thanks for your work.”
