    Hello,

Went out riding today with Orux and the open bike maps and found a few things that I would like to change. The street name text size is too small to see even at 100% zoom. I tried adjusting the text size to 2.0x and it made absolutely NO difference on the screen. I even tried clearing the offline cache with no effect. Is this broken or am I doing something wrong?

The other issue is that I would like the map zoom level to be out one step from whatever the default (100%?) is so that I can see more area on the map so that I can see where I am. I tried setting the default zoom level to 60% and this seemed to help. After I did this the screen rendering got really, really slowww! I put the zoom level back to 100% but can’t tell it made any difference.

Well, now I pick up the phone again and there are NO street names ant ANY zoom level! The map looks different also… Like the rendering theme just changed on the fly! BTW, how do I know what render theme Orux is using? I go to the Mapsforge Theme and it shows all 4 Elevate, 4 Elements, and Default Mapsforge but NONE are highlighted. I think it was recommended to use Elevate XL on my Galaxy S4 and at one time I selected it but have no confirmation that it actually set.

Thanks for any insight into these issues. Since these are mostly Orux issues/questions would this be more appropriate to post there?

    Cheers,

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

You set Mapsforge text size under:
Global Settings > Maps > Mapsforge settings to 2x and it does’nt make a difference? – Thats really strange.

I suppose that you will find support at the Orux Forum:
    http://www.oruxmaps.com/foro/

Dont be confused about the fact that the SubForums are named in spanish language.
You will receive help in english too, most of the threads are in english.

    Best regards,
    Christian

Well, I am pretty sure that I have the correct Elevate XL theme selected. Increasing the text size multiplier appears to do nothing to the text size but the larger that number is the fewer street names are actually displayed! 1.0 shows them all but too small. 2.0 shows none! in between the size stays the same but the number of names decreases as the multiplier goes up.

    I’m headed to Orux Forums…

    Cheers,

    Steve

    Hi Steve,
it’s logical if the text size increases that fewer street names are displayed. Street names can only be shown on straight parts that are long enough to display the whole name, so the smaller the text size the easier it is to have a long name displayed. So maybe you don’t see the increase as it’s not big enough for you to make a difference, but it makes a difference to the space available for street names.

    Tobias,

This makes sense for the street names but doesn’t really help the usability. I just looked at OSMand+ and the text is a little bigger than road is wide and also follows the curve of the road. However, the road still needs to be long enough (or the zoom level high enough) for the name to fit on the road. It would be nice if Elevate/Orux could support this kind of behavior.

I think I just noticed something really bizarre with Orux. There is pinch zoom and there is volume button zoom but they don’t appear to track at least according to the zoom level on the Orux dashboard! I.e. at 100% zoom on the dashboard the displayed map can be considerably different area depending which zoom was used to get there. Is this the expected behavior? It is really confusing and may be part of the street name issue.

I was reading on your blog that you have Elevate 4 almost ready to go. I see that you are mostly using an emulator on Windows for development. I am going on a month long cycle tour and would be glad to evaluate it for you on my Galaxy S4 if you would like. I would probably need a little help installing it and be able to revert to Elevate 3 if I ran into a serious issue. Please let me know.

    Best regards,

    Steve

It all comes down to what the underlying vector library currently supports for street label rendering.

That’s Mapsforge and it’s already known that there is room for improvements in that area. We’re aware of that.

As Emux said above, that’s not something OruxMaps (or Even a theme) can solve, it’s an issue with mapsforge maps.

There are two kinds of zooms: digital zoom and zoom levels.
Digital zoom is like a magnifying glass and is the %-value, it’s just like magnifying a paper map, you don’t see more details, but everything on the map gets larger.
Zoom level, the integer shown at the dashboard, is like changing between different paper maps with different scales. E.g. ZL 12 is more like a road atlas with only major elements, ZL 16 is more like a topographic map with many details.
I personally don’t use digital zoom with OpenAndroMaps vector maps, they are perfectly legible for me on my phone. If I use raster maps like the general overview maps or various online maps, it’s not possible to change text size, and those are made for less ppi. There it makes sense to change digital zoom.
How you can trigger (or disable) digital zoom or zoom levels is set by “Global settings”->”Maps”->”Zoom settings”
Also have a look at the OruxMaps manual for this.

Thanks for the offer. I tested of course on actual devices, but I only have 240ppi and 320ppi at hand, so other ppi are tested in an emulator. But of course any testing is welcome.
You can install Elevate 4 next to Elevate XL without problems, as it uses different filenames, and switch between them how you want. Just use the quick install link for OruxMaps in an Android browser in your phone.

Thanks for the explanation! After more research it appears that the Mapsforge map format is completely different than the one that OsmAnd uses so it is illogical to expect similar behavior. Users can only hope that this gets improved in future releases as it is really holding back an otherwise great app.

Thanks for the quick tutorial on the zoom functionality of Orux. Using the USA / North Carolina map it takes a map zoom level of at least 19 but usually 20 before the road names start showing up on the map and they are barely legible indoors with good glasses on my GS4. From here I can digital zoom in to see the names clearly outdoors or zoom out to see enough of the map to decide where I am going. This may work out better when I am actually following a map route on my upcoming tour. Right now I am just riding around my neighborhood.

I tried to install Elevate 4 but ran into difficulties. The quick install doesn’t have the 4 rc2 in it yet. I manually got the Zip files but it downloaded into the BCN directory and the XML file names are the same as the ones for 3 but peeking inside had the 4rc2 comments so I have the right files. Do I need to rename them or do something else to get them to play with 3 on Orux?

As written above: you need straight segments of a road to render names, the longer the name the less likely it appears.
For me the text size is legible, make sure you have the right size of Elevate 3 for your device. If I make the size larger in the theme it’s also less likely to appear.
Quick install and manual download installs exactly the same file, so maybe you used the wrong quick install link. Only those for Elevate 4 in the forum post or in the news post for the RC are for Elevate 4.
Elevate 4 files have different names except for the standard 240dpi version. You wrote above that you use Elevate XL, so this should work.
For manual install read the readme file.

PS – seems like you configured BCN to always download zip files from us. You have to reset this in the Android app settings.
