    Totally frustrated trying to install on OruxMaps. I get to web site on Chrome select the map… Tell it to install on Orux… Orux opens but no download occurs! These are big files but no download status no nothing! And, yes, I am on a fast WiFi network.

    Is the App busted or is there a step missing from the tutorial? I only get to step 5 on here:

    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,

    You are right, Orux doesnt show a progress bar or something similar -thats annoying when you try quick install first.
    However, you can see the downlod in the Android notification bar.

    But be prepared that the downlod of bib maps + decompressing takes a while. Considering a download speed of 2-4 Mb/sec you can expect
    1559MB / 2mb/sec = 779sec / 60 = 12minutes + 3-4 min decompression on state of art device.

    I recommend to test the quick install with a smaller map like corse or cannary islands.
    When you call the map manager of orux to load a fresh downloaded map dont forget to refresh the maplist (the icon with the arrows in a circle in the upper function bar.)

    If the download doesnt appear in the notification bar please report this here and give us the Name of the device and the version of Android you use.

    Best regards, Christian

    Well it is MORE than annoying to a new novice user. It is just plain bad design to leave any user hanging with no feedback at all. I hope the developers can figure out a way to fix this.

    Making all of this worse is the Quick Start video that does show some kind of download bar in the application. I don’t know what this is/was but it just confirmed that my device wasn’t downloading. The video should be updated or removed.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Tell it to the developer at the OruxMaps Forum. But before compare it to other apps – you get feedback, in the usual Android way. As Christian wrote, check your notification area. If you download something in your Android browser, you also don’t get a download bar in the browser window but in the notification area.

    No, the video is totally legit. It’s just a tablet view, where the notification area is opened. You can’t ask to have extra videos for all Android versions and devices so that it looks like the one you are using.

    Thanks for the update. Unfortunately I am obviously NOT a sophisticated Android user. I am used to using a Windows PC where there is lots of screen room to provide user feedback. A simple note in the install instructions to check Android notifications for download progress would be enough to prevent another novice user from falling into this rabbit hole.

    Hi Steve,

    Thanks for your suggestion.
    I’v added this to the Quick-Install manual.

    /*
    Hint: Orux does’nt inform you about the download progress, there is no progress bar. However, you can watch the progress, as its the case with all other download jobs, in the Android notification bar. The location and design of the notification bar differs with the type of your device and version of Android you run.
    */

    Best regards
    Christian
