Would it make sense to filter out the combination of footway=sidewalk from highway=footway|path? As far as I can see it seems to clutter the maps to little purpose.
Also, what about filtering out footway=crossing in the same way? That tag might serve a useful purpose for crossing a busy road but could also easily be over mapped. Between them, crossings and sidewalks account for around 50% of the mapped footways.

I have the option „Paths + tracks“ in the City style of Elevate to reduce this clutter. I’m not sure if filtering it out in map creation might have negative side effects for some usages of the maps.

That’s helpful in cities but nonetheless there is a big difference between a hiking path and a sidewalk. IMHO that creates a problem in the mapping.

Possible, no Problem.
However, I’m currently busy with porting the whole OAM-System to Linux (already done for 95% on the old Rendermachine) and modifications on two systems in paralles always lead to bugs.
So, when maps from the Linux-system are ready for testing (new contourlines, land_shapes,…) and approved and the discussion/decission how to proceed is final made there will be further improvements for the maps.
