    I am a long-term contributor to OSM. I have used a Garmin eTrex Legend for all my mapping requirements until now, creating my own map style to use in Great Britain. I was introduced to OruxMaps recently. I have downloaded Elevate 2 and am using Elevate_Hiking_L.xml. I appreciate the large amount of work entailed in creating a comprehensive map style. I make one request, however: I compare the presence or absence of stiles, kissing gates, etc. with my eTrex while walking so that I can update OSM upon my return. Such distinguishing icons do not appear in the OpenAndroMaps map style I currently use. I wonder if this might be addressed for a future release, with individual icons to differentiate the various barriers?
    Separately, having registered with OpenAndroMaps this morning, I cannot find a place to alter the password given to me. Help, please?

    Hi, An update of the Forum software destroyed the Link to the user profile.
    However ts easy. Just klick on your avatar in the right sidebar, this leads to your profile where you can edit it incl the password.

    The barriers in Elevate2 are defined like this:

    	<!-- barriers -->
    	<rule e="any" k="barrier" v="border_control" zoom-min="14">
    		<symbol src="file:/ele_res_l/s_border_control.png" />
    	</rule>
    	<rule e="any" k="barrier" v="*" zoom-min="17">
    		<rule e="any" k="barrier" v="bollard">
    			<symbol src="file:/ele_res_l/s_bollard.png" />
    		</rule>
    		<rule e="any" k="barrier" v="lift_gate|chain">
    			<symbol src="file:/ele_res_l/s_lift_gate.png" />
    		</rule>
    		<rule e="any" k="barrier" v="stile">
    			<symbol src="file:/ele_res_l/s_stile.png" />
    		</rule>
    		<rule e="any" k="barrier" v="cycle_barrier">
    			<symbol src="file:/ele_res_l/s_cycle_barrier.png" />
    		</rule>
    		<rule e="any" k="barrier" v="gate">
    			<symbol src="file:/ele_res_l/s_gate.png" />
    		</rule>
    		<rule e="any" k="barrier" v="block">
    			<symbol src="file:/ele_res_l/s_block.png" />
    		</rule>
    	</rule>

    So in Elevate the icons start at level 17, this could be changed with ease, just change the value in the xml file or use Elements instead.

    Take a look at the tagmapping here:

    <!-- barriers -->
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='border_control' zoom-appear='10' />
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='checkpoint' zoom-appear='10' />
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='block' zoom-appear='14' />
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='bollard' zoom-appear='14' />
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='cycle_barrier' zoom-appear='14' />
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='gate' zoom-appear='14' />
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='lift_gate' equivalent-values='swing_gate' zoom-appear='14' />
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='chain' zoom-appear='14' />
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='stile' zoom-appear='14' />
    <!-- barriers -->
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='city_wall' zoom-appear='14' />
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='fence' zoom-appear='14' />
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='retaining_wall' zoom-appear='16' />
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='wall' zoom-appear='16' />
    <osm-tag key='barrier' value='block' zoom-appear='14' />

    Most barriers are included in the mapdata from level 14 on.
    BUT take care, the icons are sometimes eliminating each other.

    Best regards, Christian

    I thank you for your prompt reply. I have changed my password successfully.
    May I explain the barriers question further? There have been many changes from stile to kissing gate in my area of the Chiltern Hills. It is relatively important when walk leaders state how many stiles are present on a particular walk. I created an icon for ‚kissing gate‘ in my map style, especially, because it does not have its own in OSM. It appears as a gate symbol sometimes, undistinguishable from a traditional gate, or nothing at all in your map style, from what I have seen. I wonder, is it possible for me to introduce the same icon I used?

    Hi,

    Actually the kissing gate is not included in the tagmapping.
    Well, I spent lots of time on vacation in England and Scottland from the Lake District up to Shetlands and I know that Gates are essential especially when walking apart from the crowd.

    So, of couse, I will add barrier=kissing_gate to the tagset (on Nodes).
    I will render the UK_Scotland and UK Map again so that you can check the new Mapping.
    The Maps will be ready for download in about 2 Days.

    @Tobias
    : Would it be possible for you to add these gates to Elevate/Elements?

    Best regards to UK

    I am delighted to have discovered OpenAndroMaps and OruxMaps that make use of OpenStreetMap. The creation of OpenStreetMap allowed me to continue my lifelong love of and involvement with maps following my retirement from a career in cartography. I remain heavily committed to it.
    I am very grateful to you for accommodating my request so readily and speedily.
    Thankyou.

    (BTW, Email notifications for the forums are broken again.)

    I updated BBPress cause the changelog says that Notifications should work now.

    In the end notifications are still brocken but the russian workaround that did the job before does’nt work with the new BBPress version

    Ireland, GraetBritain, UK_Scotland are ready for download.
    The andromaps_## Themes within the zips include the kissing_gates.

    I am sorry to be a pain: I understand what you write regarding ‚The andromaps_## Themes‘. I thank you for it and I do see the kissing gate in those extracted files. I was using Elevate 2 L, however – whatever the difference. The folder and file structure is different and the dates are of 23rd June. I wondered if you planned to update the relevant files, here, too?
    While in this post, I wonder if you can advise me: I have installed Locus Map recently in addition to OruxMaps in order to compare and evaluate them. I copied the Great_Britain.map file from OruxMaps both via Windows Explorer and directly to the Locus>maps folder on my internal storage in order to save a further download of 812MB. I am given the message ‚Problem with Great_Britain.map‘. Should this be so and should I properly carry out a quick install directly to Locus from your download page?

    Tobias said that he will add the kissing_gate in the next update – I dont know his shedule.

    in order to save a further download of 812MB

    It is really simple to add the Orux map folder to Locus in the Locus settings – no need to copy maps.
    Open Menu > Maps > Offline Tab >Tap on blue “PLUS” button > Add local maps> add folder > navigate to the folder where Orux saves its maps > and tap on “checkmark” in top panel.

    http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_offline
    http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_external

    Thats all, now you can access the maps situated in the orux folder from the Map Manager in Locus.

    Best regards, Christian

    I’m working on updating my Voluntary UK theme to include kissing gates but the current OSM icon for kissing gate (last symbol) is over complex and difficult to tell what it is at small sizes. I know this is non standard but I am wondering about a symbolic representation of a kissing gate, similar to the gate symbol on the left. Does „x“ represent a kiss universally? Or just in the UK? Any thoughts?

    As those are a UK specialty, the UK symbol is probably universal 😉
    But I have just checked, there are some mapped in my area, too, although I have my doubts if those are really kissing gates – mostly we have gates, stiles, turnstiles in cattle areas (btw – Christian, do we need turnstiles in the maps as well?)
    SJJB has this symbol: http://www.sjjb.co.uk/mapicons/svg/barrier/kissing_gate.svg
    I will check if this works as well. But it might take a while for the next Elevate update, I don’t have much time now and some other things I want to edit.

    Christian, do we need turnstiles in the maps as well?

    I don’t think so – these turmstiles are usually for entrance in parks aso…

    BTW: I’v found a good source for SVGs anf PNGs, maybe you take a look at:
    http://uxrepo.com/icon/kissing_gate-by-open-maps

    Its the same symbol like from your source, I think this is the right one for kissing_gate.

    When checking with overpass turbo, there are 123 in the bavarian alps in comparison to 30 in the greater Munich area (same size bounding box). And looking at the definition and image of the wiki, I think it’s meant for rural areas (esp. if you compare 6000 barrier=gate in Munich to 2000 in the bavarian alps).
    But I personally have no big use for barriers anyway 🙂

    Thanks, it’s always good to have many sources 🙂
    SJJB is the original source. OSM Icons also offers SSJB’s icons, and added lots of others in similar style.
