Hi Christian and Tobias,
in the dropbox folder you will find some new overview maps, were in particular for level 5 to 7 I amended the original ones with overlays for country and state/province capitals, with local and international names. I had to draw the data directly from OSM and add quite a number of tags (capital = 4) manually in the process towars osmosis, because in OSM itself there is a lot of information missing in most countries, and I have not handled all of them yet. (Took quite some evenings, and I will feed into OSM when I have some time.)
You may have a look and I’d appreciate your feedback.
TXs and cheers

sorry, I don’t have access to the dropbox you mentioned, so I can’t take a look 🙂

Dezember 2, 2016 um 18:54 Uhr #14624mbe57ModeratorWorks ?
Dezember 4, 2016 um 13:41 Uhr #14659TobiasAdministratorI just downloaded the World 1-8 Orux, works well. I don’t have a lot of time at the moment, and I rarerly use low zoom anyway. But the captions are better legible, also still a bit small (@320ppi, so 480ppi is worse). But making them larger would be overlapping/eliminating problem again. Maybe only capital=2 and country names?
Best regards,

Dezember 28, 2016 um 18:43 Uhr #15012mbe57ModeratorHi Christian and Tobias,
I have worked a bit and made one change plus a number of additions:
– for ZL 4 I dropped the ugly MapQuest relic und used opentopomap instead
– at ZL 4 I added all country names (highlighted), and moved them around to make things fit etc., quite a puzzle
– in ZL 5, I needed the space for the country capitals; they are complete now for admin_level 2. I also added some regional capitals under admin_level 3 (makes sense in large countries like Russia; all state capitals in US are in this bucket, too). I may put the capitals of oversea territories there as well (like Guam, Cayman Islands and alike – a bit of curation work …)
– in ZL 6 the I added the province capitals for a number of larger countries (Brasil, India, and some other sweetspots). OSM being pretty unreliable, I walked through Wikipedia … That work continues, over time …
Also
– in ZL 7 I only did some spots. Need better automation here, either by using LabelLayer from MapsForge in MOBAC (no way without Ludwig and/or Emux make their fingers busy here), or via workaround with Cruiser (need propoer export tile function here. The rest is MOBAC and some Linux scripts and ImageMagick.
– I generally show the English name (of countries and capitals) first, then add one to three local official language names
Enough writing for today.
Any feedback appreciated.
Cheers and all the best for 2017
MichaelDezember 29, 2016 um 22:50 Uhr #15023mbe57ModeratorTesting ZL 4 on two devices, I found the color mix and the blurred bold a bit tricky.
So I created another version with non-bold black text, yellow stroke still, to have max contrast while preserving the highlighting.
What is your choice ?Januar 28, 2017 um 14:02 Uhr #15466mbe57ModeratorHi Christian and Tobias,
just uploaded a new release of maps after a lot of redaction and amendment work based on OSM data and geonames.
Highlighting of countries and capitals does not go well in one zoom level, so I kept the country names at zoom level 5 and start with capitals in zoom level 6.
Orux versions to come soon.
Cheers and have a nice weekend

Januar 28, 2017 um 18:52 Uhr #15472mbe57ModeratorPS: I would not yet publish, though. I need to deal with towns and cities that have no population figure. I know what to do as a workaround, and will try to do that soon.
In parallel I’m trying to collect data from other sources to reduce the number of towns and cities without population number.Januar 28, 2017 um 19:54 Uhr #15474TobiasAdministratorI now have a 440ppi device, and without digital zoom the maps are not usable anymore. Using them in combination with vector maps means switching digital zoom all the time now. As rendering is pretty fast with this device at low levels for me too (and I rarely need low level), I don’t see me using raster maps for this anymore.
But thanks for all you efforts, I’m probably not in the target group.Developer of Elevate mapstyle
Januar 28, 2017 um 21:50 Uhr #15476mbe57ModeratorAt level 8 or 9, vector maps are still challenging patience, even with a LG G5.
I agree that digital zoom (200 or 300%) are needed, that is what I do, too. But you need 200% for Elevate theme anyway 🙂
Sure the typical use case decides if raster maps are relevant for a user.
For international travels and planning it is relevant from my experience.
Also the level of curation and information you do not get with current OSM – again a question of personal focus and interest 🙂Januar 28, 2017 um 22:35 Uhr #15478TobiasAdministratorAt level 8 or 9, vector maps are still challenging patience, even with a LG G5.
The largest map I got on my phone right now, Alps_Ost, renders a full screen of ZL8 (which is 9 in OruxMaps with vector maps) in 4-5 seconds with a middle class BQ X5 Plus, that’s OK for me (with deleted cache).

I use Elevate „as is“, no digital zoom, text size and everything else at 100% in OruxMaps, so I would have to switch digital zoom every time.

You’re right, when I need a world map, I also prefer raster maps. But quick zooming out to 8-10 for overviews (=9-11 with mapsforge maps with OruxMaps) is the more common usage of these zoom levels, so dealing with digital zoom for this is now with 440 ppi more a burden. I would have stayed at 320ppi if there were up to date devices…

Yes, I like what you’re doing, but I would prefer a high dpi version.

Januar 29, 2017 um 11:57 Uhr #15480mbe57ModeratorGetting larger base maps for a given zoom level is a conceptual problem – it cannot work as far as I understand.
The highlighted label sizes I can control via the theme. And the label placement, too, by manipulating the geo coordinates – I did so already in some regions. For those (the Balkans and Caribbean in particular) I am thinking of a tiebreak – moving the names into the sea or other free space left and right, and drawing a line to the resp. territory (the Balkans will be a real problem…). On levels 4 and 5 this is a one time action I can afford, when I find some time in the next couple of weeks. For higher zoom levels this is not needed anyway.
TXs for the challenge. In the end there may be need for two versions – we’ll see.Februar 1, 2017 um 23:04 Uhr #15498mbe57ModeratorPlayed a bit and have an intermediate result – uploading right now.
ZL4 cannot be changed without breaking, simply too littel space in Europe and some other places.
ZL now has only country names.
the font sizes are mainly doubled, which should help to avoid digital zoom in the Apps.
Give it a try, and let me know your findings, pls.
TXs and cheers
