With current mapset for Australia (31/8/20) and Elevate theme, I am not seeing any rendering of mtb:scale:imba for ways that do no have a mtb:scale set. I haven’t noticed if it was working previously or not.

I’m using Locus Maps on Android 11.

mtb:scale:imba isn’t included in Elevate, as it’s not possible at the moment to add the complete set to the map, and I don’t think it makes much sense to have it only in parts.

    In addition:

I had to remove the tag-transform of mtb:scale:imba to mtb:scale cause of issues with the theme and its not really possible to transform mtb:scale:imba to mtb:scale cause the meaning/intention of both scales is not really the same.

yeh I don’t think transforming mtb:scale:imba to mtb:scale is the correct thing to do.

As much as I find the STS scaling confusing (we have no concept of Red trails in Australia, all our ski bike trails are more closely aligned to the IMBA stuff), I do think the way CycloSM renders the scaling is a decent compromise. They render the mtb:scale with priority, but if a way only has mtb:scale:imba, that it is rendered in a slightly different style corresonding with IMBA colours (Green, Blue, Black etc).
Here is a link of my local trails: https://www.cyclosm.org/#map=18/-36.74783/146.97214/cyclosm

Of course I have no idea if something similar is possible to render in mapsforge etc

Thanks for the feedback. One of the reasons I’m hesitating to add it to Elevate is that I don’t want to have competing MTB scales. If someone prefers IMBA and this is only shown when STS is absent, some could think it would make sense to remove STS from the map data. See also this debate when to use which and how one is superior to the other etc.: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:Key:mtb:scale:imba
It would also complicate the already pretty crowded MTB map style.

In Australia most Mountain Bike parks are graded as per IMBA scales and in that regard it makes sense to only have the marked with mtb:scale:imba. Alot of the use of mtb:scale here seems to be people trying to manually map IMBA scales to STS scales. elevate and CycloSM are the only maps that render mtb:Scales so would be nice to have some consistency there between them, most others are just rendering bicycle=yes/no and sometimes route=mtb.

National parks are off limits here, however there are still a lot of shared use trails, that are primarily hiking trails that you can ride on or sometimes purpose built shared-use trails. mtb:Scale:imba doesnt make sense on these so much as they don’t have any official or signposted rating.

Sorry for not getting back earlier. As written in the posts above, with the current implementation of IMBA in the maps I don’t want to add it to Elevate.
I know that it’s not so good on a global level, but I don’t have a good solution for that at the moment.
