It’s been quite a while since last OAM World Maps update – for a reason: to establish a backup for and share work between Christian and I, implementation on my environment that differs from Christian’s had to be done. WSL 2 on my end instead of Windows 10, WSL instabilities, and – worst of all – Intel CPU instabilities with random errors (13th Gen excess voltage issue) took many weeks of work; to understand the root causes, then fix. Once the system proved stable I was able to create a full set of OAM vector maps (the published ones are produced by Christian, with very few exceptions). I also added a few OAM vector maps (Nunavut, Greenland and Antarctica), to eliminate previous map source inconsistencies. So, here we are with the OAM World Maps:
– Their base maps are OAM vector maps built on the new WLS 2 system.
– Nunavut, Greenland and Antarctica are additional OAM vector maps now (not yet published).
– Now Tobias‘ Elements theme is used for the Arctic and Antarctica
– The world maps from zoom level 3 to 8 now use GEBCO bathymetry data for ocean depth shading. From downloading the data at https://www.gebco.net/data-products/gridded-bathymetry-data to the finished maps, it took only a few hours with the help of Claude Sonnet.

I think you’re well aware that the Z1 projection is incorrect.

I’m attaching a file at the Z1 scale (512×512) in the correct projection.

It was obtained from the same data (from giss.nasa.gov). The portion from 80 to -80 degrees in latitude was obtained from the Mercator projection published there, and the last 5 degrees were filled in using a completely ugly adjustment of the Braun Perspective projection 🙂

If you’re interested, I’ll also send you the ImageMagick commands that can be used to generate my file from the giss.nasa.gov files.

I really hope this will help correct this long-standing issue with the Z1 projection in the next release of the world map.

Z1 is not Mercator, but Peters Projection, hence the red latitude numbers, as apps will tell otherwise.
For a good reason: in Z1 you can understand with one view that e.g. Greenland is smaller than Africa. Mercator tricks people to believe nonsense.
For practical good reasons Mercator dominates the map world today. I would assume you are aware that there are double digit numbers of projections, because there is no way to turn a sphere into a flat map respecting all aspects at once. Peters is the compromise that respects areas to a high degree.

First of all, many thanks for keeping all those maps up to date and available.

I just downloaded a bunch of the OAM World maps. I like to have them on my device so I can independently from inflight entertainment systems see where we are.

As I was scrolling around in Japan, I noticed something that was brought up years ago: the meaning of the white uppercase characters set in red circles. However, my question is not about the meaning of these entries. I would like to bring to your attention that their massive number virtually hides the map. I attach a screenshot from my mobile device of the affected area. It shows Izu Peninsula in Japan.

I have no problem with the map as it is (given I can switch to a vactor map). However, I question the usefulness of this representation.

Oh my – these are dams, TONS of them. I need to think how I can reduce their number without hiding the relevant (big) ones … tricky.
