Thanks John; so probably a new option in Elevate for switching on/off rendering of cliffs (and maybe more, like ridges/gullies etc.) makes the most sense. Having only a light version of cliffs for the UK maps which work well with crags isn’t as useful as classic intense rendering in that areas (and the others Christian mentioned above).

My thoughts on this:
1. It is the markings for the cliffs, ridges and gorges that ought to be on the Elevate option. The names ought to remain.
2. It’s gorges not gullies that may be represented by OS crags markings. Gullies are small. My mistake originally.
3. As far as I can see, all the handful of gorges in the UK are mapped incorrectly, according to the Wiki. The mapping ought to be a single way along the midline of the gorge, rather like for a river. The sides of the gully may be mapped as cliffs, in the same way as riverbanks. The common error appears to be to map each cliff edge as a gorge itself. That should affect the representation in the theme. I have chosen to just show the name of the gorge.
4. Again, according to the Wiki, ridges are small and different from aretes which are sharp ridges in the mountains. If that is followed in the mapping then really ridges and aretes should probably be kept as different tags and only aretes given cliff-like markings. I’ve not managed to check the OSM data yet

Yes, my plan is to keep the names. With gorges/gullies etc. – I will look more into it in comparing the real data. At least one gully which I stumbled upon was represented by the crags, too. It will depend on what is the most common case. And it’s an option anyway, naming will be the biggest problem e.g. „display OSM cliffs (only deactivate for UK maps with OS crags present, disclaimer: some OS crags are missing)“ 😉
