I’m confused. I signed up for Backcountry Navigator and am excited with the potential, but there is no information about the differences between Orux and Locus — how does one choose? Also, I installed Locus on my Android phone and downloaded a map, but I haven’t found a path for choosing a theme. Guidance, please.

    The Themes are here:

Install them using the approbriate buttons and chose the theme in Locus, its easy

It’s best to test yourself, there’s a free version of Locus with ads that has the most important features, and the free OruxMaps version has all features. In the end it boils down to preferences of handling and what features you use.

    They’re both excellent apps.

They have common features, but also differ in many others.
Tobias is right, the best is to explore them.

I have been an Oruxmaps big fan for years – and I still Love the app.
But, it’s very hard to use, it requires a lot of nerdying. It’s incredibly powerful, but the developer cared most about features (which is good) rather than usability.

Locus is expensive, but it’s MUCH easier to use, and it’s constantly kept up to date.

Funny, it’s the other way round for me. I think OruxMaps didn’t have a good UI in the beginning, but now it has a relatively simple interface (for such a powerful app). Yes, there are tons of features (but I think Locus has even more), but you can ignore those you don’t use easily.
The most important part is to understand the differences between route, track and waypoint, and nearly everything else follows this logic.
The UI is what kept me from using Locus, although I gave it several intense tries. For example I still haven’t found a way to add all information I like to have on the screen while recording a track and following a route (guidance), which is pretty simple in OruxMaps.

I am grateful for the timely and very useful responses to my post. I have downloaded both versions and will have some fun (he says hopefully) „playing“ with them. Many thanks — this is a great forum, and the thoughtful input has been most helpful.
