Hi,
It seems that the zoom-appear of protect_class has recently changed; natural parks and reserves used to appear at zl 8 until last sumer, and now they appear at zl 12 only. Is this intentional (I don’t see any zoom-appear for protect_class in tagmapping)? In my opinion, these areas are much more useful at low zoom levels.

Thats strange cause I havent set/changed any zoom-appear or zoom-override for protect-class.
I cant remember that there were changes in tag-mapping.

national parks and protected_areas appear on zl12, as these areas always did – there were no changes.
Exception: A very few map of most remote sreas.
= there are 5-6 different tagmappings depending on urban/remote area type.

Can you give me an example of such an area in question?

You can use Elements Theme instead of Elevate – Elements is much better in those remote areas.

protect-class has renderable=“false“ in the tag-mapping, that means it can’t be rendered by itself, just as part of a main tag of which it’s an attribute; in this case boundary=“protected_area“ or boundary=“national_park“ or leisure=“nature_reserve“. As Christian writes for dense areas these have had a zoom-appear of 12 since probably forever. But there are cases because of bugs in in mapsforge that they appear earlier.

I have a recent version of Alps-West (december 2023), and an older version of France-South (july 2022) which overlap; with the old version, natural parks apear at zl8 with both Elements and my own theme (Hike, Ride & Sight!), see attachment for „Vanoise National Park“ here:https://www.openstreetmap.org/query?lat=45.33427&lon=6.76239#map=13/45.33427/6.76239.
You are true, boundary=national_park already had zoom-appear=12 in tagmapping in january 2022, however national parks would actually appear from zl8, and this was much more usefu than showing this at high zoom levels!

I don’t know if the change is intentional or not, but natural parks appear again at zl8 in April 2024 version (I did not check for February or March). Thanks! 🙂
