Hi to anyone that can help.

I have used andromaps for years. Absolutely excellent. Through cgeo for geocaching. Currently on a relatively new Samsung A series device. I made the mistake of logging in to download some US maps before a holiday there. When i saw that there new OS elements to the UK maps I decided to download Scotland and GB too and, of course, the new to me Elevate 5. It’s a disaster. Even on the relatively small Scotland map, it takes about twenty to thirty seconds for the map to open. I tried to use the old Elevate 2 themes. It’s better, but still 10-15 seconds which feels like a lifetime as you are in and out of the maps all the time for geocaching. I unfortunately deleted the older map, which opened instantaneously with Elevate 4 (i think). Why do you think it is all so sluggish? Is there a fix? Are the old maps from around 3-4 years ago still accessible in an archive somewhere so i can go back? Please don’t ask me to do anything technical but I’m happy to try anything that might fix this. Cheers

One thing that works for me with Locus is to download and use the *unzipped* version of the theme.
Or you could try moving themes to internal memory of they are on an SD card that has been added to your phone.

Thanks John. I had tried the maps on the internal storage but not the theme. Sadly when i move the theme to the internal memory it is equally slow. They are all unzipped (I didn’t realize that it was possible to use them zipped.

    1. Do you have a lot of points displayed, such as geo caches? That really slows things down.
    2. With Locus I think turning off Automatic switching between vector maps may help if you have both Scotland and Great Britain with overlapping coverage.
    3. I believe my Voluntary themes are noticeably faster than Elevate. You may care to try the link below.

    Thanks John,
The Voluntary theme looks nice but unfortunately is just as slow as the elevate one. Even with only one cache open. Have tried the american maps from andromaps too. Just as slow. Can only assume that it is something about the most recent maps that cgeo doesn’t like.
I fear i may need to move to a different offline map provider. Gutted as I love andromaps 🙁

Are you sure the only thing that’s changed are just the new maps? Of course the old ones are smaller (more content added to OSM etc), but using Elevate 4 or 5 doesn’t make a difference. There are several factors, so it might be a different one – some changes in c:geo, hill shading activated, lots of POIs etc. I also use a relatively current Samsung A series, no problems here (but with OruxMaps).

PS: There are old V3 maps from 2019 available if you press “+” next to the maps on the download pages

    Thanks Tobias,
Yes looks like maybe a c:geo issue. Nothing has changed for me except the map and themes. All unzipped and all tried on internal card. I’ll try going back to the legacy maps to see if that fixes.

Maybe it makes sense to check c:geo support/forum etc. for this, they might know better what the problem is.

So the answer for cgeo (in case that helps others) is that unzipping the theme is a bad idea – https://www.cgeo.org/faq#theme-slow

Much better with the theme zipped. At least I now have learned re the voluntary theme, so i have a choice 🙂

I just thought I would feedback after a couple of weeks. The Voluntary theme is excellent up in the hills. Definitely something good to come out of my technical woes……
