ParticipantHello, I use Openandromaps with Locus on my Android device, mostly for hiking in the northern alps. I recently had a look at the download section here, and I noticed that Italy has the biggest single-country map size in Europe, with a 2GB compressed size that becomes ∼3GB when de-compressed. Only the two split maps for France get near it (which is interesting btw), so maybe it is time to divide Italy in two similar size maps?

KeymasterTested it a bit, makes sense to me. The north Italy map could be cut on the east side on 14°E straight down. The skewed line starting near Triest was probably only necessary to get to the south-east tip of Italy, but now this doesn’t make a lot of sense anymore.

ParticipantEverything looks good on the map, thanks! The only feedback I have is this: is it better to split based more on geographic reasons or trying to get equal map sizes? (would mean moving the split line a bit north)
I haven’t got an answer though, just sharing this input to you

KeymasterI think geographic reasons are first, map size second. It doesn’t help to split maps if you have to download both again because of geographic reasons.

ModeratorI would expect that the approach would be similar to Germany, for which you have the full map, plus three sections. People make their choice. Similar situation in the Nordics, where you have North/South plus the countries.

I think Germany is the exception; you either have full country (e.g. Austria) or several countries (e.g. Balkan) or for large countries split up maps (e.g. France). Then some additional “special interest” maps like Alps, Scandinavia south-west etc. Having three options for the whole country like Germany is nice of Christian, but shouldn’t probably set the example for all maps

Thats right.
Italy.map will be dropped, no need for it when there is a north/south with lots of overlap.March 17, 2023 at 09:10 #53631mbe57
ModeratorMy point was to consider dropping the “exception” German full map …
