Hi.

I’ve been looking for ways to use maps offline for a verity of purposes.

I’m seeking offline because I’ve moved to a location in BC that’s consider rural & as such the only internet I can use is quota based & slows to a crawl when the quota is passed (dial-up speeds… Goggle Maps can take minutes to load let alone actually look for anything).

I’ve downloaded your BC map & elevate style to help me find local hikes (there’s a few missing as well that I know of but aren’t shown) & while it’s useful so far there’s a couple things I was hoping you’d help with.

Specifically if I’m attempting to do a route cruiser tells me to ‘load a graph’ & it I try & create a graph it appears to want me to load a OSM file. How can one use this feature offline with your map specifically for hiking?

The other thing that isn’t showing offline is the actual (3D) elevation data; cruiser went online & downloaded the data for the local area. Is there a way to download an archive of this & then provide to cruiser for your map?

Other then that thanks for making your work public. I haven’t poked at maps before and am finding understanding all the technical details a bit on the harder side for using them all offline. Yours is very straight forward.

Offline routing in Cruiser needs first to load offline routing graphs created with desktop Cruiser using osm/pbf files. Can download them from Geofabrik.
Offline routing supports the following travel modes: car, foot, bike.

Hillshading in Cruiser is online provided by the available servers.

If you have an Android phone or tablet, you might want to look at Locus Map (free or pro). It uses the same offline map file (enormous for BC!), and can do routing and slope shading, both completely offline. You’d need to download the routing data occasionally (BRouter app) to pick up changes, of course, and the slope shading data at least once (a Locus built-in feature), but that data never changes.

I use the combination above in airplane mode sometimes, to save battery. Trip planning on the big-screen tablet, in front of the campfire, offline somewhere in beautiful BC, is a joy. 🙂

Thanks… I’ll look into it.

I do have an android but it’d actually only be taken for remote (overnight which is rare) hikes; mostly I’m limited to hikes I can get to & from in a single day so planning them on the computer works fine as I just need to be able to calculate travel time & actually find them.

Having a topo map is nice as I’m able to show other people what the hike is like & helps get others to walk with. 🙂
Shame the 3D effect isn’t offline for that reason. (And is it just an effect of colouring or is there actual 3D data that could be used in a modeller program?)
