Could we have building=cathedral tags in OAM? Cathedrals tend to be significant landmarks in the landscape, much more so compared to many of the other building tag values.
March 12, 2022 at 20:45 #47479TobiasKeymasterThey are in OAM:
<osm-tag key="building" value="church" equivalent-values="cathedral,chapel,monastery,mosque,temple,wayside_shrine,shrine,religious,synagogue,stupa,place_of_worship,rectory" zoom-appear="13"/>

March 12, 2022 at 21:05 #47486TobiasKeymasterNo, you can’t.

There will also be 100s of churches around the city too. Most maps highlight cathedrals due to their prominence and also because they are a major tourist destination. I guess this is similar for other countries too.
March 13, 2022 at 11:55 #47489TobiasKeymasterAh, you didn’t request that it should be separated – but can we have building=cathedral, which we already do – so I didn’t get that.
Changing already existing tags in OAM is something we are very reluctant to do, as every theme that exists for OAM hast to reflect that. So we only do this if this really is an important change, e.g. if something is wrong in the current tag-mapping, mapping or meaning of tags have changed etc.
Having building=cathedral separated would mean that every theme has to reflect this, or it won’t possibly not shown any more.
I don’t see the importance for hiking/cycling maps to have Cathedrals stand out, see also this thread with a similar request:

March 14, 2022 at 16:13 #47497karlchickParticipantI see. I agree in principle with what you are saying.
But for churches, I suspect most themes are relying on a combination of amenity=place_of_worship and religion=*** to display many different symbols.
Cathedrals are usually large/tall buildings that are visible landmarks from all around the surrounding area. Hence they are often indicated on maps more prominently to aid quicker identification when our in the field. With a paper map and compass, these landmarks can be used to aid with navigation, bearings etc. Maybe with GPS this is deemed less important…

As you said yourself, this is not so important with GPS maps. I also would argue that churches are more important for hiking maps, as cathedrals are usually surrounded by a city and less prominent than a lonely country church.
So I don’t think that it is a big problem that you can’t render cathedrals different to churches, at least not bigger than the problems that result by separating this tag.Developer of Elevate mapstyle
