    What do you mean with “What map is that?”. The theme is Elevate, as stated. Same look in Voluntary btw.

    May we include that theme in c:geo (https://www.cgeo.org) and point the download to that site?

    Would be similar to below screenshot of downloading Elevate theme (and maps) from OAM.

    @eyEa
    That would be fine. If you want to link to a download page then please use https://tiny.cc/vol_download which is likely to be stable.

    We’d need to include a static URL. E.g. for Elevate it’s pointing to https://www.openandromaps.org/wp-content/users/tobias/Elevate.zip
    I’d like to include your theme right along Elevate as seen in that screenshot.

    Would https://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/openandromaps/themes/voluntary/downloads/Voluntary%20MF5.zip be considered a stable URL we can link to?

    I hope that will be highly stable.

    That’s an mapsforge issue. Maps are rendered in separate tiles, and if an area has a caption and/or a symbol, it’s rendered on each tile if it’s larger than one tile (still depending on rendering rules like priority/ifspace etc.). That’s something different than the ducks, which should be an area fill which is meant to be repeated. Depending on the tile size (which should adjust to the screen ppi) it’s usually not that annoying.

    This used to be a bigger issue for relevant large areas in OAM like protected areas, lakes etc., as every caption was repeated a lot. But Christian created a nice solution for it by calculating a single node for large areas (not all, but the one’s relevant for hiking/cycling – not airports), so only one caption is now shown if one renders this only at the node and not the area. This could also be a solution for the ducks – rendering them for the node would be the same like the one avocet in OS maps.

    PS – Geoff, I move our discussion about OS crags in Elevate here:

    @eyEa We’re talking at cross purposes slightly on the repeating image theme.

    My question
    Can you think of any good maps that use a repeating symbol across a wide geographic area that doesn’t denote anything on the ground?

    I meant other then OpenAndroMaps. My complaint is that a repeating symbol that doesn’t represent anything on the ground is a distraction. Ducks or planes. I wonder whether any good maps other than OpenAndroMaps use this idea successfully. I don’t remember coming across any. So….I was interested in seeing a good example of the idea, where it works well.

    My comment about ‘not on my OpenAndroMap’ was because I hadn’t looked hard enough. I guess I had probably zoomed-in so far that none were visible(at Heathrow). I hadn’t clocked the image name which was a good clue!

    The problem with comparing scalable maps like OAM ones with printed maps is that paper maps are designed for one particular resolution and scale. Simply reproducing a paper map and magnifying or reducing it would produce an unusable product. So an approach has to be found that works at different scales. A single poi symbol for a large area just doesn’t do it in most cases.

    @JohnPercy – I admire your patience and I’m disappointed at your fondness for ducks.

    I played with the zoom in Ennerdale. The fewest ducks I could get on screen was 28!
    I nudged in on the zoom and I was greeted with 105 ducks.
    If you can’t be persuaded to ‘ditch the ducks’ then how about seriously reducing the ‘duck density’?

    Another idea: Could the ducks disappear for Zoom level 14 and above so they don’t spoil the map when navigating with it?

    @geoffmoz
    Over the next few days I’ll produce a duckless version as a trial.
    I’ll put a single poi icon in the area.
    I have tried this before and wasn’t happy with the result but maybe it’s worth looking at again.

    John…Thanks. I’d agree that it’s definitely worth looking at again. I don’t like to think of you sat at home with nothing to do!

    I don’t suppose there’s an easy way to anchor reserve POIs to positions where they are obvious without a ton of work? eg In Ennerdale, the SE end of the lake would be a good spot. Clearly visible and roughly in the centre of the reserve.

    Could the ‘duck density’ be reduced by using an svg that was mostly transparent empty space with the symbol in the middle? Even if there was only one duck on screen, that combined with the faint yellow wash that you’ve used to denote the reserve still tells the tale.

    I know that when I’m navigating a route, anything which jumps around the screen is a distraction. I might be heading up to Glencoe mid-week….currently duck-filled 🙂

    If I could get support for fewer ducks I would, but nearly all my friends will glaze over at the mention of maps 🙂 Only one really uses OSM mapping. My only hope is that other interested parties read this thread and join in. I see I’ve lost eyEa already so I’m off to a bad start. I can only get down on my knees before you, clasp my hands together and plead. It seems to be having an effect…..cheers.

    A problem with displaying nature reserves is that one has to cope with both very small reserves and very large ones. However I’ve done some modifications to reduce the number of ducks! It’s not quite duckless despite the name.
    I’m not convinced it is better however.

    John, I’ve just had a whizz round the country, zooming in and out of nature reserves. Great. Thank you for putting the effort in to make that change. Your change gets my vote 10/10. Thumbs up. 5 stars.

    First I spot the telltale wash, then as it starts to get bigger on screen, up pops the duck bound to the name identifying the reserve. That’s it, I really don’t need to see it any more. Now I know what the colour wash is. If I really cared where the borders were I could explore them. Now when navigating, there isn’t a constant distraction from the dancing duck troupe. I still see a few ducks darting about the reserve at the higher zoom levels but they are nearer the tolerable end of the scale. Thanks. Please don’t revert to the older version of Voluntary. My hands are tightly clasped again.

    Well done.

    Now…… I’m planning to do the Cape Wrath Trail (https://www.capewrathtrail.org.uk/) in April finishing up at the firing range in the NW tip of Scotland.
    Do we need to talk about Military Areas and exclamation marks!?
